Homemade Dishwashing Soap

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 | Uncategorized with

So you have a dishwasher, the soap for the dishwasher can be expensive!  Here are a few homemade recipes to help reduce the cost that I have found:

Powder Recipe #1

1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax

Powder Recipe #2

1 cup Baking Soda
1 cup Borax

For the above two recipes:

  • Mix thoroughly and store in a plastic container, use approximately 2 TBS per load.
  • Use vinegar in the rinse compartment as a rinse agent to help prevent residue
  • Try adding 2-3 drops essential oil

Powder Recipe #3

1/4 cup Washing Soda
1 TBS Liquid Dish Detergent

Use the above for each load of dishes.

Liquid Dishwasher Detergent Recipe

1 part baking soda
1 part borax
1 part water
1 drop lemon or orange essential oil per cup of detergent

  • Mix the ingredients thoroughly and store in a sealable jug.
  • Use 2 to 3 TBS per load.

If you’re having a cloudy dishes problem after using the homemade detergents:

  • Try adding a few drops of liquid dishsoap to the powder compartment when you add the powder.
  • You could also try cutting back on the amount of soap used (if you’re using 2 TBS, try cutting it back to 1 - 1 1/2 TBS).
  • Make sure to use vinegar in the rinse cycle

Wow! Do they still make Borax? That stuff was like the be all and end all cleanser when I was a kid.

My recipe is washing soda, borax and salt. The salt gives a bit of abrasive to it. I also mix in a little commercial dishwasher soap. that solved my film on the dishes problem.

Great recipe Stephanie! Thank you so much! Where can you find borax now a days? I used to find it at a local drug store, but I think I was the only one buying it, because I went back there and they did not reorder it.

Thank you for sharing tips for cloudy dishes–I’ll try the liquid soap. I have been using the Borax/baking soda/salt recipe for months now but have not been very impressed with the way it leaves dishes, even when I mix it with half commercial powder.

Great MIFS recipes for dish washing. I use one similar in my automatic dishwasher and it works wonderful.

there is a new product out that filters the water going into your dishwasher. the film or cloudy white look is caused by hard water. this filter eliminates the problem and is very affordable. you can get it at dishwasherfilter.com. i was amazed how clean my dishes came out after the first load.
