A Social Worker’s Perspective

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 | Story with No Comments »

My fiance came home with a great story today, but I really just think she wants that purse at the store she eyes every time we go shopping, what do you think?

Here is her story…

Today, I just want to remind you all to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment as if it were your last. Something that I like to live by and my favorite all time quote is “Do what you HAVE to do now, so later you can do want you WANT to do”. I am a firm believer in saving, planning for retirement and doing things the right way, but sometimes, you just need to have fun.

I was with a client today. She is an elderly disabled woman, who doesn’t work (has never worked in her life, due to her condition) and her only source of income is a monthly check she receives from the government. At the grocery store, she reached for a $22 piece of steak. I immediately objected and started telling her how many pieces of another type of steak she can buy with the same money or all the other ways that were racing through my head of making her dollar stretch. The woman smiled and shook her head at me. She explained that she shops twice a month and for the last 15 years she has been getting the same type of steak during each shopping trip. She told me that every two weeks she has one special day, the day when she treats herself to her steak. I have known this person for quite some time now and I have never witnessed her speak with such clarity and strength as I saw this afternoon.

I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s steak, a new pair of shoes, that plasma TV you’ve been saving up for or a trip to Mexico. Save your money, work hard but make sure that you make the time to enjoy all your hard work by rewarding yourself every once in a while.

What can I say… I’m a girl, but since diamond(s) would literally erase my life savings, shoes are the next best thing. What’s your guilty pleasure???
