Simple Way of Saving Up

Monday, October 1st, 2007 | Savings with 2 Comments

changejar.jpgYes there are many ways of saving up and some of us use this way and “take it to the bank once or twice a year for vacation money.  But some of us don’t care about it at all and leave it on the ground, give it away, or just leave it lay.  Yes, I am talking about coins (change).

It is a great idea to find a jar and keep all your change that you get in it, don’t leave it in the car, in the couch, on the floor, because these round disks are going to help you save money for vacations, trips, and more.  How often do you get change?  I am sure you get change just about every day from your spending, unless you use those dreaded credit cards!  Our quick savings tip for today is to keep all your change in one spot and do not touch the money until it is time to cash it all in.

Clean our a jar and keep all of your silver coins in that container and put all your pennies in a bigger container.  By always keeping your change in these containers you are “saving” for the future, yes it might not be a million dollars or thousands, but I have found that once a year I can cash in a cool couple hundred dollars to go on a trip with just from change I received from buying other items.

Resist the want and need to dump all those coins into those green machines (the coin counters you find at the grocery stores and other places), they charge you 18% or more of the coins they count!  Thats $18.00 for every $100.00 you put into it, WOW!  Take the time to save your money using these machines and roll the coins yourself, it doesn’t take long and take them to your bank that you have an account with and they will either deposit the money or you can take it in cash.

One thing that I am starting to do now is once a month or so I am rolling the coins, taking them to the bank for cash and putting the cash into the jar, so it will be easier for the future, but do NOT do this if you can control yourself from spending the dollars in the jar until it is time to.

Make a goal for the money, what you want to do with the money you are saving in the jar and put a note on the jar to remind you what it is there for.  This is also great for teaching kids how to save up money for things they want to buy.  Happy Savings!
